I get a lot of questions about how I shop for rugs and how I found all the ones in my home. So today, I wanted to share my tips and tricks!
A few weeks ago, I was trying to find a new rug for my kitchen. I ended up moving my rug from my entryway into my kitchen. See the updates we did to our kitchen in this post here. But I was going down rabbit holes searching, googling and scrolling for hours. So hopefully some of these tips can save you a little time!
How I Shop for Rugs
- I always start with Google and type something very basic into the search engine like ‘blue rug.’ Once you hit enter a list of images from various websites will appear right at the top. I always scroll thru these first because they are almost always along the lines of something that I am looking for. Click on items you like and Google remembers things that you look at. So the more you Google something and click on items you like, the more Google will get to you know you. Seems weird, but it works!
- If I don’t find what I am looking for right away, I will narrow down my search a little bit more. For example, I might google 4×6 blue rug. Or 4×6 traditional rug. I get a little more specific. And then it will generate new rugs at the top of the search page. I also try and take keywords from rugs that I like. For example, herringbone blue rug.
- Another way I like to shop for rugs, is on the LTK app. I love this app so much because you can actually buy directly from the app. Influencers can link the exact rug they have or something similar and you can shop it. It’s also really nice because you can see the rug in ‘real life.’ Sometimes the pictures on the websites are not the best or it is hard to envision it in your space. But when you see it styled in other people’s homes it makes it a little easier to picture it in your home.
- In the LTK app, you can shop a few ways. You can start to follow influencers who have a similar style as you. Or you can type keywords into the search function just like Google and see what pops up. Another great feature in the LTK app is you can heart photos or products, so it saves it for you. And you can come back to it.
- Once you find a rug you like, you can always buy a 2×3 rug to see if you like the colors or style of the rug. I did this when I bought my rug for our living room because I needed a 9×12 and I wanted to make sure it looked just like it was pictured online. It’s so much easier to return a 2×3 rug either by mail or back to the store than a big 8×10 or 9×12 rug. They are really heavy and awkward.
- If all else fails and I’m not finding anything I like, I will scroll for hours on a retailers website. I usually filter on the size and general colors that I want and go from there. Wayfair is one of my favorite retailers to shop from in terms of rugs and furniture and they have thousands of rugs. Make sure to set the filters so you are seeing more of what you are looking for.
Where I Shop For Rugs
Here are some of my favorite retailers to browse for rugs and where I have bought a lot of rugs from:
- Serena & Lily– One of my favorite retailers in general! They are a little pricey, but if I love something I am willing to pay a little more to get exactly what I want. They do have sales a lot so wait to buy when it’s on sale. See all the items from my home that I own from Serena & Lily in this post here.
- Wayfair– These are the best budget friendly rugs. My living room and dining room rug are from here. They have thousands upon thousands of rugs so you are sure to find something you like. They also have sales quite frequently so wait for a sale because their rugs are almost always significantly cheaper.
- Etsy– This is the best place to find trendy oushack rugs because they come directly from overseas and are a lot cheaper! I recently found this shop that has the cutest rugs at a reasonable price. I have been eyeing this rug for my entryway. I also bought this rug that I am really impressed with. I bought a small 2×3 because I wanted to see the colors in it. Originally, I was considering it for my master bed, but the colors clash with my wall color is it’s back to the drawing board for now. This rug would be adorable in a little girls room.
- Amazon– Surprisingly, Amazon also has a really great selection of rugs. I recently bought this one and really love it. Originally, I was going to put it in my basement landing, but I decided I am going to use it in my powder bath. It looks really cute and I love the scallop edges. It’s also a lot softer than similar rugs like this. I am also about to buy this one for our play room (see my full design here). The one we have now is too small and I want something a little more neutral.
One other tip I have is that once you find a rug you like, make sure you do a Google image search on it. It will pull up the other websites that rug is sold at. That way you can find the website with the best price.
I learned this the hard way. Originally, I ordered my living room rug from PotteryBarn and was going to pay $250 in shipping! I already had my mind set that I wanted the rug and I hit purchase. It was on backorder for about a month which I was ok with. In the meantime, I found the EXACT same rug on Wayfair for $50 less plus free shipping!! Luckily, I was able to cancel the rug with PotteryBarn and I ordered it thru Wayfair. And saved quite a bit of money. So since then I always do a Google image search to make sure I am getting the best deal.
Rug shopping is not always the easiest, so hopefully these tips help you in your search!
PS- I do this Google search trick for almost anything that I am looking for in my home and that is how I found the leather ottoman that I just ordered my play room. I Googled ‘light leather ottoman’ and it was the first one that popped up. It ended up being perfect and a few weeks later, I ordered it! It’s kind of crazy how well Google knows you haha.
