This year you might remember I listed out the home improvement projects we want to tackle by month. We’ve been doing really good sticking to it although, I think I was a little aggressive because we are behind hahah. Read more about them in this post. One that was not on the list or even in the immediate horizon was updating our third floor bathroom. BUT- that is exactly what we are doing haha. And I’m really excited about it. Read on and I will share how I am going to turn this into the coastal bathroom of my dreams.
Third Floor Bathroom
We have three floors in our home- yes three! It’s crazy and a lot of stairs, but also kind of nice. We have a set of stairs in our office that leads to the third floor which has a guest bedroom and a full bathroom. We haven’t done anything with this space yet because it needs a ton of work. It will be on the list someday, probably not anytime soon. We need new carpet, paint, new windows, re-work the closet and update the bathroom.
Well, our plans kind of got shifted up when out of nowhere Kurt decided he was going to start tackling the grout in this bathroom. It was really old and really gross and really badly needed to be updated. Sloane takes a bath in there every night as it is our only bathtub and this is also what our guests use.
So he re-did all of the grout in bathroom and wow, what a difference it has made!!! I’m shocked. Originally, I thought we were going to have to rip everything out and start from new. But this space just needs a little more love.
It really got me thinking and brainstorming on what we can do to update it. And I’m really excited to share what the plans are to make this the coastal bathroom of our dreams. Ok maybe not my dreams because…budget. But it’s going to look really good when it all comes together!
Coastal Bathroom Plans
Here is the before of the bathroom! This is the picture from the original listing. It’s a small space but all of the tile is white which you don’t even realize because it is so gross!
Since the grout in the shower made such an impact, Kurt has been working on the floor next. I can hardly wait to see how this comes out! The tile is all white so just pops when the grout is nice and white too!
We have this really ugly wood wall- above is a close up of it. They did it like an accent wall, but they did a really poor job at hanging it. So it’s coming down and I hate it. It needs to go. The plan is to remove it and add shiplap. I think this is what we will use, but we have just started our research. Funny enough, I kind of hate shiplap haha. I’ve been seeing it more and more though and don’t mind it as much. But I think in this case it’s the best thing we can do. I know when we tear down the current wood on this wall, it’s going to be a disaster so to spend the time to re-work it or re-drywall just isn’t worth it. Shiplap to the rescue!
I also plan to paint the ceiling- that will be the only thing that won’t have shiplap on it. And I will paint the existing cabinet we have. I’m thinking white for the cabinet. I might do a light blue and match it back to the shower curtain but that might be too matchy, matchy for me.
The plan is to eventually update the countertops. It is really small in there so I don’t think it will cost a ton. But we will add that to the list. And we are going to add a new toilet. We need a new one in our powder bath so just planning on doing that all at once. We actually went to look at toilets the other weekend at Home Depot lol. What a Saturday it was!
The Details
The fun part about a coastal bathroom is the details! First off, I’m going to add a fun shower curtain. One of my favorite brands also makes shower curtains so I am going to have a custom one made in this fabric. I’ve used their fabric for these pillows here and I used this for my shade in my powder bath. I love this fabric so much and have been wanting to use it somewhere, so I’m excited to see how this will come together.
We plan to rip out the large mirror on the back wall. It’s nice that it opens the space up, but its old and gross. And needs to go. I will add this towel rack to one side for extra storage and replace with a new mirror. Although this mirror is kind of a place holder. I really like it, but we don’t have a lot of space so I think the fact that it moves will be kind of annoying.
I’m obsessed with these sconces! I was going to use them for our powder bath update but I decided to go in a different direction but these are going to be perfect in this coastal bathroom!
We don’t have a ton of storage in this bathroom as it is really small. So I thought adding this storage shelf would give us a little more storage.
I also know gold hardware is trending, but that’s just not my style. I love the crispness of polished chrome so that is what I plan to use! It ties it all in so nicely.
This will be a project we tackle as we can and as our budget allows lol but I’m really excited to see how this coastal bathroom comes together!
