I remember last year I went down a rabbit hole trying to find the perfect throw pillows for my couches. We have two couches if you can remember from my mini first floor tour I shared not too long ago. We have a living room that we don’t really use that often and then our play room where we spend almost all of our time. I am a huge pillow fan! I’m always buying new ones and re-decorating. But when it came to our home this time around, I wanted to find ‘the’ perfect ones.
So it took me a little time and lots of scrolling haha. When I finally found the perfect prints, I was even more confused about what size to order! I did a lot of research before I ordered my throw pillows and then just kind of went off what my gut told me. And I couldn’t be happier with not only the patterns I choose in both rooms, but also the throw pillow sizes.

In our living room, I wanted that layered look and I always knew I wanted two patterns of throw pillows on my couch. As much as I love the look of throw pillows, I also want my home to be inviting and livable. So I knew I wanted a smaller pillow because I would have two on each side. It’s kind of annoying when you sit down on a couch and there is basically one seat because there are so many pillows. Although it is really comfortable, it’s not that practical. I was aiming for both!
I decided on the sizes 20″x20″ for each pillow on my couch and also a 20″x20″ pillow on my chairs. While a lot of websites will tell you this is too small, I disagree! I get the look of different patterns, but they don’t overwhelm my couch. I’m really happy with the final result.

Our play room is a different story. I wanted things easy in this room. We spend all of our time here and it has to be kid friendly. Originally, I was only going to do one pattern of pillows on my couch so I went a little bigger and did a 24″x24″ pillow in the green pillow. I was really happy with the result too and wasn’t planning on adding another pattern until I saw this really affordable striped pillow from Amazon that I couldn’t resist.
The striped pillow is a little smaller at 20″x20″ which I was ok with because I wanted it to sit in front. I honestly, love it so much! It does make the couch a little crowed though. And if more than one person sits down, you do have to adjust the pillows because they take up too much space. I am ok with it because I love how it looks! My husband might say otherwise haha.

I really think this is a personal opinion on if you like a lumbar pillow in your chair like a 14″x22″ or a square pillow like I did. I tested it out and ultimately like the 20″x20″ square pillow in my chairs, but I might also change my mind on that some day haha.
Inserts I Use and Sizing
Inserts are almost just as important as the actual pillow cover you choose. This is something you do not want to skimp on! A cheap insert can make a pillow look poorly constructed and overall just bad! Whereas, you can have a cheaper pillow cover with a good quality insert and it looks like a million bucks! This is my favorite insert I’ve used with all of my throw pillows. And always remember to size up in your insert. For example, if your pillow cover is 20″x20″, you want to buy a 22″x22″ size insert. Always go up at least one size- sometimes with bigger pillows you can go up even more. This gives you that fluffy full pillow!
