About a year ago we finished our powder bathroom. We did a lot of it on our own, which took us forever haha! But it turned out really great and I still love it so much. You can see the finished product in this post here. I knew the one thing I wanted to splurge on in our powder bath was a custom roman shade. So today, I’m sharing all the details on it!
Our Custom Roman Shade

This was my first time doing any sort of custom curtains or blinds, so I really had no idea where to start. Some people I follow on Instagram always raved about Martha and Ash. It seemed like an easy process and the final results that I had seen were beautiful. So after debating about it for a couple of months I decided to get a quote.
The Process

I filled out the roman shade quote form and we went from there. After that I emailed back and forth with them on various things. One issue being I originally wanted an inside mount, but there was this weird ledge at the top of the window, so it would not have been flush. It would have stuck out too far. They helped me land on an outside mount, which in the end was the right choice for our window.
Once we ironed out all of the details, they told me how much fabric I needed. I ordered and was able to ship it directly to them which was really nice and easy. They confirmed once they received the fabric and then about six weeks later my shade was done and they shipped it to me. I ended up having my handy man install it for us because it was going over our newly wallpapered walls and I wanted it perfect. But I don’t think it would have been that hard to hang.
Picking the Fabric

You can pretty much pick any fabric. I knew the fabric I wanted and they told me that was a good one to use. But I’m sure if it would not have worked, they would have said something. When I bought my pillows for my play room, I had ordered extra samples. And when I was planning out our powder bath, I had a sample of the wallpaper with this fabric and just fell in love. I loved the fabric pattern to begin with and knew I would use it somewhere in my home. It was a happy accident when I saw how well it went with the wallpaper!
I highly recommend ordering samples. They are usually pretty inexpensive and it can save you a ton of money if you end up really hating the fabric or the colors are way off.
Price
Our custom roman shade came to $652 total. I needed three yards of fabric for a total of $216. And the construction from Maarth and Ash was $436. Custom roman shades can really get expensive. Actually all custom drapery is. I was shocked that they needed three yards of fabric considering my window is pretty small. But honestly, custom blinds and drapery is really where you want to spend your money in my opinion. Cry once, buy once is my motto! Even if we eventually re-do this bathroom down the line you better believe the new design will incorporate this roman shade.
What I Learned

I thought the process was really easy and I would 100% use them again. The construction is beautiful and I am so happy with our roman shade. I do think you need to go into it knowing what you want. There are a lot of things you need to pick and new terminology. But they have a lot of good education and examples on their site.
Take your time with it. It’s not something you want to rush at all because as you can see, it’s pricey. And make sure you 100% love the fabric. I think that is the most important thing!
Also, I wish I would have asked if they could do cordless. It didn’t even occur to me though. I had my handy man zip tie the chain up so it didn’t hang. I didn’t like the way it looked because it just hung there. And to be honest, we are never going to use the blind anyway since the window is already faded out. Just something I would ask about next time!
