Ok, so I didn’t completely stop washing my hair (that would be gross). But I have drastically cut back on how many times a week I shampoo. And let me tell you I have grown to LOVE dirty hair. I never thought I would say that out loud. Over the years I have been told how bad it is to wash your daily and that I needed to go longer in between washes. Clearly I didn’t listen to anyone. I continued my routine of washing and blow drying my hair every day.
About eight months or so ago my hairdresser decided to move to LA. I took my time finding a new one and every two months I was trying someone different. Every hairdresser I saw was in SHOCK that I actually took the time to wash and blow dry my hair every day. So, it got me thinking. Maybe I should give this a try. This was around the time of NYE and I was thinking of my goals I wanted to put in place for 2017. And one my of goals that I decided on was to stop washing my hair every day- no joke! I wrote this down in my notes section of my phone so I could go back and remind myself.
At first, I was a little skeptical. Was this really going to work for me? I loved the bounce and clean hair feeling every day. But I have learned to LOVE dirty hair! I actually prefer my hair more on the days that I don’t wash it. Once you find products and a routine that you love it makes your hair feel amazing. My hair has never been more healthy and less damaged. And that bounce I use to love after blow drying my hair- I still get.
The best part about not slaving to your blow dryer for 30 minutes every morning is the time you get back. I use that time once a week to clean my makeup brushes- which is so important and something that I was never really good at doing. Or I use that time to pick up around the house, take Addie for a short little walk. The possibilities are endless!
I have found that on the days I don’t wash my hair I still like to run a blow dryer thru my hair to straighten out any kinks that occurred at night. On the days I do wash and blow dry, it’s important to use a good heat protectant and this is the one I use. I spray my hair with this while it’s wet. On the days I don’t wash my hair I like to use a little dry shampoo to take out any greasiness that I have. My favorite is this one. I have tested a few different ones before I found the one I love. This one isn’t very powdery which I like, so it doesn’t create a lot of build up. You don’t get that chalky feeling in your hair, which I like a lot better. Also, it doesn’t change your hair colors like most other dry shampoos I have used. When I was trying to find a dry shampoo that I liked I bought the travel versions of a few brands I wanted to try. That way I got to test it out and it was much cheaper than buying the full version.
When I do wash my hair I like to use a few different shampoos. I never thought I would own this much shampoo lol! I use this clarifying shampoo at least once a week. This helps to really get out all of the product I am using especially the dry shampoo. Before I started using this I was noticing a lot of build up which I didn’t like so this gets rid of all of that. I also like to use this clarifying shampoo if I haven’t washed my hair for an extended period of time. That way you get out all of the dry shampoo you used and there is no build up.
Another shampoo I like to use every week is a purple shampoo. This is really just for blondes but it helps to keep my color from not looking too brassy. Right now I am using this one. After using it your color instantly looks so much better! And your hair is super soft. I just starting using this particular purple shampoo, but I am already hooked! At first it’s little scary when you first use this purple shampoo. The shampoo is a DEEP purple! I know what you are thinking ‘You want me to put THAT one my light colored hair- no thanks’! It’s ok because I thought the same thing, but you just have to trust me on this one. Once I got the courage to use it, I realized how it helped my hair, so it’s become part of my weekly routine. Next up I am going to try the purple conditioner to go with it.
My every day shampoo and conditioner that I have started to use is Pureology. I use this shampoo and this conditioner. Their products are a little more pricy, but you get what you pay for! I was using some stuff from the drug store and I couldn’t figure out why my hair was so dry. Until I talked it over with my hairdresser and she recommended I use a better shampoo and conditioner. And it helped change my hair drastically!
I also use a hair mask once a week. I get Olaplex treatments every time I get my hair dyed at the salon, but I also use this take home mask once a week. Your hair feels AMAZING after these treatments. It is SO soft. If you have color treated hair, I highly recommend you use this mask!
It sounds like a lot of work and a lot of product but it’s so much easier NOT washing your hair everyday. It’s so much less maintenance and you aren’t standing under the blow dryer for hours on end. I seriously never thought I would say it or change my habits- but I love dirty hair!
